Cloud On My Tongue – Tori Amos [Song Review & Lyrics]

Full of the disjointed lyrics that Tori Amos does so well; the song ‘Cloud On My Tongue’ ranges from one picture reference to the next, and leaves behind a trail of imagery that is at once distracting, and cohesive. It beings with it, a longing to be elsewhere, to have the ‘Borneo’ that is warm and comforting, yet the current world is so cold.

She is between worlds, the one she desires, and the once that she is forever stuck with. We follow the story in brief flashes of inspiration, never quite sure of the precise subject, yet the poetry of the song is clear, and unmistakeable, it fills the mind and soul, it resonates with her confusion; the subject of the song.

She is ‘In circles again’ as though her life is a continual cycle that never ceases, and one that she desperately wants to escape, to escape the cold, and the hard edges of life.

Dance with her, and see the flickering razors of light sift through the chinks and cracks of her soul.

Someone’s knocking on my kitchen door
Leave the wood outside what
All the girls here are freezing cold
Leave me with your Borneo
I don’t need much to keep me warm

Don’t stop now what you’re doing
What you’re doing
What you’re doing, my ugly one
Bring them all here
Hard to hide a hundred girls in your hair
It won’t be fair
If I hate her
You can go now

You’re already in there
I’ll be wearing your tatoo
You’re already in there

Got a cloud sleeping on my tongue
He goes then it goes and
Kiss the voilets as they’re waking up
Leave me with your Borneo
Leave me the way I was before

You’re already in there
I’ll be wearing your tatoo
I’m already in circles and circles and circles again
The girl’s in circles and circles
Got to stop spinning
Circles and circles and circles again
Thought I was over the bridge now
